Emerging from Zagreb’s independent underground, ŽEN have built a reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in the regional alternative scene. Formed in 2010 and rooted in the creative hub of AKC Medika, the band’s debut album I onda je sve počelo arrived in 2013 as a fully formed statement — expansive, atmospheric, and difficult to categorise.
Describing themselves as “prog indie rock” only partially captures what’s happening here. The album moves fluidly between post-rock, noise pop, psych, and math rock, blending technical precision with a strong sense of mood. Rather than committing to a single style, ŽEN operate in a wide sonic space, allowing songs to evolve gradually, often shifting direction mid-track without losing cohesion.
From the opening moments of Nije se desilo, this approach is clear. Light, melancholic guitar lines intertwine with subtle rhythmic shifts, creating something that feels both delicate and intricate. There’s a strong 2000s influence here — echoes of midwest emo and math rock — but softened by an airy, dreamlike atmosphere.
That balance between structure and texture continues throughout the album. On Voda je more, distorted guitars expand into broader, post-rock territory, while layers of synths add an ethereal quality that keeps the sound from becoming too dense. The band constantly moves between clarity and abstraction, allowing space as much as complexity to shape the music.
One of the album’s most striking moments arrives with Slučaj No. 3583. Here, ŽEN lean into tension, building a darker and more unsettling atmosphere. Jagged, technical guitar work collides with heavier, almost grunge-like textures, while the structure shifts unpredictably. It’s a track that feels restless, even slightly chaotic, but never loses its sense of purpose — a reflection of the band’s ability to navigate multiple influences at once.
Vocals across the album are used sparingly, often functioning more as an additional instrument than a focal point. When they emerge more clearly — as on Iskrenost je posebna — they remain subdued, blending into the surrounding textures rather than dominating them. This approach reinforces the album’s emphasis on atmosphere, placing the listener inside the sound rather than guiding them through it.
Tracks like Sve ostaje nakon nas and Ton i broj continue this layered, immersive approach. Dissonant guitar tones, shifting rhythms, and subtle electronic elements combine to create a sound that is at once hypnotic and slightly uneasy. There’s a constant tension between lightness and weight — breezy passages giving way to darker, more claustrophobic moments.
Despite consisting of only eight tracks, I onda je sve počelo feels expansive. Songs stretch outward, building gradually and exploring ideas rather than resolving them quickly. At times, this can make the album feel dense or even slightly fragmented, as it moves rapidly between different textures and influences. Yet this same unpredictability is also its defining strength.
ŽEN successfully constructed a layered, evolving sound that rewards attention — an album that reveals itself gradually, shifting between beauty and dissonance, clarity and abstraction. It’s a complex, atmospheric debut that firmly established ŽEN as one of the more interesting and forward-thinking bands in the region’s modern scene.
